Online Degrees
There are several types of online degrees, just as there are several types of campus based degrees. There used to be a stigma attached to online degrees, but that has changed. Colleges, universities, trade schools and even k-12 schools have realized the effectiveness of online education. Most schools are working to offer online curricula as fast as they can.
Online Diplomas and Certificates
The first level of online learning would be the diploma or certificate. A diploma could be for completion of high school level coursework. A diploma could also be for a program that the school has created to qualify students for a specific type of specialty. There may or may not be some sort of accreditation backing up a diploma. If you plan on earning an online diploma for your own satisfaction, there would be no need for formal accreditation. If you need the diploma for employment or another purpose, check to see if it has some sort of accrediting body involved.
Online Associate Degrees
The next level of online learning is an Associate degree. An Associate Degree is generally thought of as a two year degree. Most online degrees can be earned faster than a campus-based degree. Many community colleges specialize in these types of degrees. They need to be recognized by an accrediting body of some sort in order to be transferable to most four year colleges. Many Associate degrees are geared towards a specific type of occupation or career. Whether you are earning an Online Associate Degree for employment or to transfer to a bachelor's program, be sure to find out whether the degree and or school is accredited.
Online Bachelor Degrees
The next level of online learning is the Bachelor Degree. This degree is generally thought of as a four year degree. A Bachelor Degree can be earned much faster online than on-campus. Many careers and well paying jobs require a Bachelor Degree. If you already have an Associate Degree, you may be able to transfer those credits to a program that will then allow you to finish earning your Bachelor's online. Just make sure the program and or school is accredited.
Online Masters Degrees
The next level of online learning is the Online Masters Degree. The Masters is generally thought of as a six year degree. You can earn an Online Masters Degree faster than a conventional campus based Masters Degree. A very popular degree is the Online MBA (masters of business administration). Certain professions require this higher level of education. Many corporate workers who have a Bachelor Degree may find that they need to complete a Masters program in order to climb the corporate ladder and advance to higher paying positions. Completing their Masters Degree Online allows them to continue the duties of their current employment uninterrupted.
Online Doctorate Degrees
The Doctorate or PhD generally takes ten years or more to earn. It is a high level of education that requires great dedication. There are certain careers and professions where a Doctorate puts you at the top levels of their industry. Those with a Doctoral Degree generally flourish in the world of teaching and academia. There are a few programs that allow you to earn an Online Doctorate. An Online Doctorate is generally pursued by someone who already has a Masters Degree, but does not wish to (or cannot) attend college at a campus based facility.
