The Department of Education estimates that nearly 4 million students will receive Pell Grants this year, totaling $8.75
billion. Approximately 9 million students and parents will borrow $34.7 billion through the Stafford and PLUS programs.
Statistically, aid from the Student Financial Assistance programs (Federal
Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Work Study, Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford
Loans and Federal PLUS Loans) is roughly 2/3 of all college student aid awards.
