Time For College From Home

It is late November 2008 and the economy is taking a beating like our generation has never seen before. Many say it will get worse before it gets better. Some say recovery will take a very long time. One of the things that is going to make this a difficult time for individuals and families is high unemployment. It looks like unemployment may spike to the highest numbers since the great depression...or even higher.

I am talking about economic depression. But, if you have ever suffered through an extended period of personal unemployment, you know that means a different kind of depression. When you get depressed, that takes a toll on your mind and body. It also takes a toll on those you live with. The entire family will be affected.

You can spend a certain amount of time looking for employment. But, that will not fill all the minutes and all the days and all the hours. Sitting around doing nothing is not going to help anything. It makes you feel even more helpless. It does not help prepare you for work when the economy starts to recover. Yes, eventually the economy WILL recover.

Who is going to be in the best position to get those jobs when the economy does start the recovery process? The educated. It's that simple. We live in a time of rapidly advancing technology. The jobs and careers of the future are going to take more training and more education. It you resist that notion, you will be left behind. This does not mean everyone has to be a genius (or even an academically inclined person).

Maybe you already have college some credit, but you just need to finish earning that degree. There will be plenty of jobs and careers for people who have average intelligence. You will probably have to have some specialized training for those jobs. Everything doesn't have to be rocket science! You may also want to take a look at our sister site: CareerColleges.US

The are several reasons that the coming years will be a great time for people to participate in distance learning and earn their college degree online.

If you are working less (or not at all), you will have plenty of time to study on your own schedule and really focus on what you are learning as you complete courses. Most online colleges offer 24/7 learning!

You will be keeping busy. That means you will be less likely to be depressed or feel bad about your situation. Your family and personal life is likely to benefit from that. Everyone will be less likely to get on each others nerves.

You and your family can have a more positive attitude towards the future. You will know you are doing everything you can to prepare yourself for a better life. When things begin to turn around, you will be ready and armed with knowledge. You will be armed with an accredited college degree. You will be ready for those interviews. You will have those advantages over many, many other people who will be competing for the same jobs.

The big remaining question is probably, "How will I pay for it"? I can tell you there are probably more options than you think. One thing to keep in mind is that you don't have the same expenses with online college that you do with conventional college. No car, gas, insurance, maintenance, parking, travel time, babysitters ...you get the picture.

Many people who have been investing in the stock market have seen their investments shrink. Many have pulled out of the markets and are keeping what they have in cash. If you are one of those lucky people, consider investing some of that money in one of the best places you can invest ...between your ears! Yeah, invest in yourself. Invest in your education. It may pay off more than you can ever imagine.

If you are not one of those lucky people with money to invest in your education, look for other options. Nobody is going to come knocking on your door offering you money to attend college. You are going to have to do some real searching.

You can start by checking out our "Financial Aid Page". There are plenty of grants, scholarships and loans out there to be had. Many of these scholarships are going unused simply because people are not applying for them. Of course, most people don't even know about them. This is where you will have to be diligent about searching. They ARE out there. Many of these scholarships are offered for specialized programs. So, if there is a certain area of study that you are interested in, focus on looking for offerings within that niche.

NOTE: Many online colleges have financing plans that allow you to pay off your education in installments. You can also consider putting some of your tuition and expenses on your credit cards. You may need to make use of several different programs and methods to get it all paid for. Be creative. Be persistent. When you are looking for employment, ask if the company has any education programs that you might be eligible for.

If the economy gets even worse, many governments may see the wisdom in offering more grants and scholarships to those who wish to complete a college degree. In the long run, a more educated population is good for us all. So, be on the lookout for an increase in those kinds of opportunities. For those with vision, this will be a very good time to improve their education.
